In the palace garden of Krishnadevaraya grew all kinds of flowers, fruits and vegetables. Once Tenali Raman’s son who was playing nearby saw some beautiful red roses in the garden. He wanted to take some to his mother. As he was plucking the flowers, the guards caught him. On the way to the king, they met Tenali Rama.
Rama was surprised to see his son with the guards. “What is the matter?” asked Rama. “He was caught stealing roses,” said the guards. Rama knew that Krishnadevaraya loved his garden and anyone caught stealing would be punished severely. Rama looked at his son and said in a strict voice, “Very well, he has done wrong and he needs to be punished for it. But, please cover him with a shawl as the sun might affect him.”
The guards did as they were told. Vishnu, Rama’s son was very mischievous and realized that his father had a reason for asking him to be covered with a shawl. “I am very thirsty,” said Vishnu to one of the guards. While the guards went to bring water, Vishnu hiding his face under the shawl ate all the rose petals quickly and threw the stem. The guard returned with some water, Vishnu drank it up, washing the rose petals down his throat.
The guards took Vishnu straight to the king. “Maharaja, we caught Vishnu stealing roses from the royal garden. They are still in his hand,” said the guards. “Is it true?” asked the king angrily. “No Maharaja, it is not true,” replied Vishnu. “Take away your shawl and show me your hands,” ordered the king. Vishnu threw of the shawl and showed the king his hands. There were no flowers.
Since there was no evidence against Vishnu, the king had to let him go.
