He was so badly treated by his master that he ran away to the forest. As he was walking along, he saw a lion. He was about to run away when he saw that the lion was not going to attack him. It seemed to be in pain. Androcles walked up to it. The lion held out its paw to him. “I think the poor beat is hurt,” said Androcles to himself.  “Let me see if I can help it.” So he gently held the paw with both hands. He soon saw that the paw was swollen and bleeding as there was a big thorn in it. Gently, Androcles pulled it out. The lion licked him as if to say, “Thank You”. Then it walked away. It was no longer in pain. A few days later Androcles was caught by the king’s men and taken back.  “A run away slave!” cried the king. “As a punishment he must fight a wild animal.”   So
